Delco Hi-Q Remembers Longtime Quizmaster and Friend Tom McCarthy

Delco Hi-Q  is saddened to share news of the passing of Tom McCarthy, who served as Quizmaster for an extraordinary 39 seasons, beginning in 1979. Tom passed away on June 1, 2025.

An award-winning actor with a career spanning five decades in television, film, and stage, Tom brought his professional polish, theatrical presence, and kind spirit to every Hi-Q match. He was well known and highly respected in the Philadelphia theater community, where he earned acclaim for his compelling stage performances and mentorship of fellow actors.

Tom was passionate about Delco Hi-Q—not just as a “paid gig,” but as a meaningful part of the student learning experience. He believed deeply in the program and looked forward to each new season with genuine enthusiasm. His unique ability to command a room while putting student contestants at ease made him a cherished figure throughout Delaware County’s academic community.

He was inducted into the Delco Hi-Q Hall of Honor, a distinction reserved for individuals whose contributions have left a lasting mark on the program. Following his retirement, Delco Hi-Q named its Most Improved Team Award in his honor, a tribute to the encouragement and support he so often gave to teams striving to grow and succeed.

Even in retirement, Tom remained an active supporter—frequently calling to check in, share a story, or offer a word of encouragement.

“Tom was more than a Quizmaster—he was the heart of Delco Hi-Q. His quick wit, kindness, and ability to put contestants at ease made a lasting impact on all of us. He genuinely cared about every student and every contest. He will be deeply missed,” said Rick Durante, Executive Director of FMFCU Foundation and Director of Delco Hi-Q.

Tom McCarthy leaves behind a legacy of kindness, excellence, and deep dedication to youth, education, and the arts. He is survived by his two children, Kelly and Tom. His impact on Delco Hi-Q and its students will endure for generations.

Delco Hi-Q extends heartfelt condolences to Tom’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him.
