Delco Hi-Q, the oldest continuous academic quiz competition in the United States, is poised to begin its 71st consecutive season. The season kicks off when Ridley High School hosts Sun Valley and Archbishop Carroll High Schools on Monday, December 3rd. Twenty-One high schools will compete this year, culminating in the Delco Hi-Q Championship in March 2019. Teams will be competing to win back the Donna Zerby Trophy from two-year consecutive champions, Haverford High School.
The popular program just celebrated 70 years of competition, starting in 1948 as a high school radio quiz competition sponsored by Scott Paper. On October 13, 1948, Sharon Hill High School defeated Marple Newtown High School in the first ever Hi-Q contest which was broadcast on Chester radio station WPWA.
Today, Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union Foundation and Delaware County Intermediate Unit continue to bring this unique academic competition to Delaware County students. Throughout Delco Hi-Q’s many seasons, sponsors have changed, students have come and gone, and the format has evolved but the founding principle remains: Stimulate young minds and constructive contribution to the youth of Delaware County Pennsylvania.
